SC Freiburg prevailed in the Europa League despite being behind at OGC Nice. After four match days, the sports club is one of the top teams in the league phase.
Ten points from four games – SC Freiburg remains on the road to success on the European stage. On Thursday evening (November 6th), the sports club won 3-1 (3-1) at the French representative OGC Nice and thus consolidated its position in the top group of the Europa League.
At first there was little danger of scoring, then Kevin Carlos scored
Without former Bundesliga professional Dante – the 42-year-old was unable to get fit in time with knee problems – Nice had the first half chance of the game. Freiburg’s Matthias Ginter shot at Nice attacker Jeremie Boga in front of the penalty area, the ricochet whizzed around two meters past the left post of the SC goal (5th minute). The sports club was by no means hiding, stood tall and put the French under pressure early on. Except for a shot that was too centrally placed by Derry Scherhant (8th), the guests were unable to create a compelling scoring opportunity in the first 20 minutes.
In the middle of the first half, OGC Nice took more and more control of the game and took the lead in the 25th minute. Sofiane Diop fed Kevin Carlos with a pass, who appeared free in front of Atubolu from a half-right position and fired powerfully into the far corner to make it 1-0. Freiburg complained that Carlos was offside, but Derry Scherhant overturned this – the goal was correct.
Freiburg turns the game around before the break
Even after conceding a goal, Freiburg stuck to their pressing tactics and were rewarded for it after just under half an hour. Nice captain Melvin Bard misused the ball in his own penalty area against the onrushing Yuito Suzuki, who fed Johan Manzambi, who first let an opponent get out and then netted it into the left corner to make it 1-1 (29th).
The Breisgauers now presented themselves more courageously in the offensive game and created good chances. For example, in the 37th minute, when Vincenzo Grifo and shortly afterwards Derry Scherhant were denied by goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf. After the subsequent corner, it was OGC captain Bard who made a serious mistake. Bard fouled Suzuki in the penalty area – Freiburg received a penalty. Vincenzo Grifo converted safely down the left to make it 2-1 for the Bundesliga club (39th). And that’s not all: Three minutes later, Derry Scherhant completed a nice attack on the left side to make the score 3-1 at halftime (42′).
Nice pushes and pushes without success
After the break, the Gastegbers appeared to have recovered well from the setbacks before the break and pushed for the next goal. The biggest opportunity came in the 63rd minute, when Philipp Lienhart blocked a shot in desperate need and Abdul Samed then chased the ball over the Freiburg box from around seven meters.
Nice pushed Freiburg in at the back, and Breisgauer’s relief attacks were rare. One of these few offensive actions almost led to Freiburg’s fourth goal in the 65th minute when Junior Adamu ran freely towards keeper Diouf, but pushed the ball a little too far and was stopped by the OGC goalkeeper.
SC Freiburg brings the lead to the finish
Freiburg survived the French pressure phase of around 20 minutes without conceding a goal and then made it 3-1 with a confident performance. Nice were unable to maintain the pace from the opening stages of the second half throughout the entire second half and only had a good opportunity in stoppage time when substitute Mohamed-Ali Cho was denied by Noah Atubolu’s strong reaction. Freiburg ended up stealing three points from the Mediterranean coast and remained unbeaten in their fourth Europa League game.
