Europa League final, Eintracht-Rangers: odds and precedents

The German and Scottish sides will compete for the victory of the European trophy in Spain on Wednesday

Eintracht and Rangers compete to win the Europa League. At the Sanchez Pizjuan kick-off on Wednesday at 21. This will be the third final of a European competition in Seville. The first saw Steaua Bucharest beat Barcelona on penalties in the 1986 European Cup, in the second Porto beat Celtic in the 2003 UEFA Cup at La Cartuja Stadium.

It is the third final of a major European competition for Eintracht: they lost the European Cup in 1960 to Real Madrid, before beating Borussia Mönchengladbach and winning the UEFA Cup in 1980. Rangers return to play a European final after fourteen years: the last in 2007/08 lost to Zenit St. Petersburg. The club have reached five finals, as many as any other Scottish side combined. Eintracht and Rangers have met twice in Europe, in a semi-final of the Champions Cup in 1960 for a total of 16 home and away goals (12 for the Germans, 4 for the Scots). The average of eight per game: this is the highest for both teams in major European competitions with at least two games played.

Rangers have lost their first two Europa League games this season, beaten by Lyon and Sparta Prague in the group stage without scoring. They are the first team in the history of the competition to reach the final despite two defeats in the first two games. Eintracht are undefeated and could become the third club to win the trophy without defeat, after Chelsea in 2018/19 and Villarreal in 2020/21. Rangers have already eliminated two German sides from the Europa League this season: Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig. If they were to raise the trophy they would become the first club in history to eliminate three teams from the same country in one season.
