The last EuroCup trip of this season was also sobering for the Hamburg Towers. The Bundesliga basketball team lost to the Romanian series champions U-BT Cluj-Napoca 92:103 (37:50) on Tuesday evening and suffered their 14th defeat in the 14th game.
Hamburg, who are last in Group A and have no chance of progressing, now have four home games in the EuroCup left before the European chapter is closed for this season. In the game against the Romanians, who were superior in all respects, Zacharie Perrin was the best Towers thrower with 19 points (13 rebounds).
“We lacked the necessary consistency. We have to work on that,” said Perrin. “Before our important home game against Ulm, we still have three training sessions available in which we will prepare specifically.”
Towers under their own basket too weak
In Cluj-Napoca, from Hamburg’s perspective, the game was more or less over after the first quarter. The Bundesliga team was 14:27 behind after the first ten minutes before the guests presented themselves a little better in the second quarter and even won the second period with 25:23.
It was only a brief rebellion for the Hanseatic League, after the third period there were 16 turnovers for the Towers in the statistics and 13 offensive rebounds for the hosts – the Romanians’ 78:57 lead was perfectly fine.
The Towers’ work under their own basket didn’t get any better in the fourth quarter. Although the final section went to the guests, the deficit was too big to be able to mount a serious comeback against the strong Romanians.
