Real Madrid can demand more than 20 million euros from the city of Madrid. The European Commission decided that the club had not received any illegal state aid, whose repayment it had signed the royal years ago. The club had complied with this arrangement and paid around 20.3 million euros to the city in 2016. Real Madrid said that this amount plus interest.
The background is in 1996, in which a property exchange between Real and the city of Madrid was planned. Since the city was unable to transfer its property for building law reasons, both sides later agreed on compensation for Real Madrid in the amount of 18.4 million euros in a contract from 2011.
However, the EU Commission sees these as illegal state aid in 2016 that were to be repaid. At that time, including interest, Real paid 20.3 million euros to the city. Around three years later, however, the EU court said that the EU Commission’s decision was illegal to repayment, the royal ones did not receive illegal aid and therefore did not have to pay. Then it took another six years before the EU Commission checked all legal aspects and completed the procedure in favor of Real Madrid.
