LUXEMBOURG (dpa-AFX) – All major roads in the EU are to be equipped with a charging infrastructure for electric trucks by 2030. The transport ministers of the EU countries agreed on this on Thursday in Brussels. In addition, hydrogen filling stations are to be built on these routes. In addition to road transport, sea and aviation were also on the agenda at the meeting. There should be clear targets as to how much greenhouse gases for energy consumed on board ships should be reduced.
Similar to shipping, new regulations are also intended to increase demand for sustainable fuels in aviation. In the future, aviation fuel suppliers would have to ensure that all fuels made available at EU airports contain a minimum proportion of sustainable fuel from 2025, with this proportion being gradually increased by 2050. The EU aims to be climate neutral by 2050.
The positions decided on Thursday are part of this project. This also includes the fact that the EU intends to emit 55 percent fewer greenhouse gases by 2030 compared to 1990. Last year, the EU Commission proposed numerous measures and laws that governments and the European Parliament still have to negotiate.
In transport in particular, it is important that greenhouse gas emissions decrease. According to information from the EU states, this area is currently responsible for more than a quarter of EU emissions.
