Gasag turned off the gas at the memorial on Theodor-Heuss-Platz – to save energy. A comment from BZ editor Andreas Vollbrechtshausen.

The Eternal Flame on Theodor-Heuss-Platz went out on Friday. For cost reasons. It burned there to commemorate the victims of flight and expulsion.

In the face of global crises and natural disasters and the accompanying streams of refugees, this monument is very topical again.

I think Gasag made a historical decision on Friday. We must cultivate our culture of remembrance so that the many victims are not forgotten.

After all, nobody would think of putting out the eternal flame for the victims of the Holocaust in the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem – just to save on energy costs.

Without the Eternal Flame, the monument has been robbed of its meaning.
