Espionage fear in the German Olympic team

Apparently, the German Olympic participants at the Winter Games in Beijing can also use mobile phones specially provided for this purpose because of the risk of espionage.

This is a recommendation of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), as reported by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. The athletes could install the My2022 app, which is mandatory for the organizers, on these devices. All Olympic participants must enter medical data such as the results of their PCR tests for the corona virus before departure and the results of a daily fever measurement.

The British had also previously announced that they would provide their athletes with new mobile phones for the duration of the competitions if they so wished.

“We have given practical advice to athletes and coaches so that they can decide for themselves whether or not to take their personal devices to the Games,” a spokesman for Britain’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) told the Guardian newspaper (Thursday). “For those who don’t want to take their own gear, we have temporarily made equipment available.”

Before the Olympic Games in the Chinese capital, there are repeated warnings that Chinese secret services could read sensitive data from cell phones, tablets and laptops. The newspaper “De Volkskrant” had previously reported that the Dutch NOK was calling on athletes and supervisors to leave personal devices at home.

Instead, the association will hand out “clean” devices to be destroyed after returning home. NOCNSF spokesman Geert Slot called cybersecurity part of the risk assessment for the trip to China.
