At the time of Christmas and the turn of the year, interviews with several politicians have been shown on Yle Actually heard in the program.
Yesterday, on New Year’s Day, the program featured an interview with ex-minister Paavo Väyrynen. Today, the former prime minister gets to speak Esko Aho.
Väyrynen served as chairman of the center between 1980 and 1990, after which Aho became his successor. When Aho became prime minister in 1991, Väyryse became minister of foreign affairs.
Aho says in an interview with Yle that Väyrynen told him openly about his plans to oust Aho and become prime minister himself.
– He looked at the presidential election in 1994 and then assessed how his chances of success could be the best possible. It didn’t agree with how I saw the situation of the party and the government. This created a tension, which unfortunately led to a rather permanent different outcome, says Aho Juho-Pekka Rantalan in the interview.
Aho describes Väyry as a talented and skilled politician.
– But he had one thought that dominated his mind, and that was the aspiration to become president. That disease has not only harmed Väyry, but there are other victims as well, the ex-prime minister says in an interview.
Väyrynen speaks
In his own interview on Thursday, Väyrynen denied that he had tried to overthrow Aho’s government and become prime minister, so that he would have been better prepared to go to the 1994 presidential election. According to Väyrynen, Väyrynen’s possible rise to prime minister was someone else’s idea.

Väyrynen also vehemently denied that running for president had become a political obsession for him.
– My mission in life is social influence. I have pursued such positions in party life and in parliament and the government council, I have also pursued the position of president so that I could influence things. I have suffered greatly from being defeated in these power struggles, and things have gone badly. It has been hard to follow, Väyrynen said Actually heard – program interview.
Paavo Väyrynen has been the center’s presidential candidate in the 1988, 1994 and 2012 presidential elections. In 2018, Väyrynen became a candidate through the voters’ association. Väyrynen ran for office in the 2024 presidential election through the voters’ association, but was unable to collect enough supporter cards.
