Where for years students walked through the corridors of Esdal College in Borger, there will soon be a place to live with a nod to the past. The plan consists of 34 homes, divided into apartments, terraced houses, semi-detached houses and social housing.
Everything in a 1930s style, as a reference to the old school building. There will be a parking garage underneath the apartment complex, allowing space to be created between the buildings for a small park.
The new construction project will be named The Local. Thanks to the plans, there is clarity about the future of the location on Hoofdstraat and this also puts an end to a period of discussion and division.
The road to this moment was anything but easy. The decision to completely demolish the old school building in particular led to resistance. Former director Tjesse van de Kamp (71) became the face of that counter-movement. He argued strongly for the preservation of the oldest part from 1930. Van de Kamp finds it incomprehensible that such a characteristic building is not preserved.
