FC Erzgebirge Aue mourns the loss of one of the best players in the club’s history. Harald Mothes has died at the age of 69, the third division relegated team announced on Saturday after consultation with the family. “FC Erzgebirge Aue expresses its deepest condolences to his wife, his family, all friends and relatives, will always honor the name of Harald Mothes and remember the great sportsman,” the club wrote on its website.
Mothes was one of the best footballers and most influential figures in the club’s 80-year history. He played more than 350 competitive games for the Saxons and is the second best goalscorer in the club’s history with 103 goals. He was also always a popular figure and ambassador for the FCE.
Mothes moved back to the Erzgebirge in 2025
Mothes was on the pitch for BSG for an impressive 15 years (1975 to 1990), was part of the “golden generation” with Holger Erler, Jürgen Escher, Volker Schmidt and Jörg Weißflog and qualified for the European Cup twice. Mothes scored seven goals in 27 games in the UI and UEFA Cup.
Mothes only moved back to his hometown in the Ore Mountains from Bavaria last year. On March 4th, he was named to the best eleven of all time as part of the club’s 80th birthday ceremony.
