The Düsseldorf technology group Rheinmetall has agreed with the Lürssen Group on the essential conditions of acquiring the Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL BV & Co. KG, Bremen-Vegesack), the military area of the traditional Bremer shipyard. The parties want to formally complete the transaction at short notice. Subject to the approval by the responsible antitrust authorities, the parties strive for the implementation of the takeover in early 2026. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

With this significant strategic acquisition, Rheinmetall extends its portfolio to naval shipbuilding and expands its position as a leading provider of defense technology in Germany and Europe.

For decades, Rheinmetall has made a name for itself as a renowned provider, especially in army technology, but has also been a proven partner of the marine forces of numerous countries for many years. Rheinmetall already offers a selected spectrum of modern system components for maritime applications and is a worldwide leading provider in particular with simulation solutions and maritime protection systems.

The current conflict situation shows that even in the maritime area, military assertiveness is becoming increasingly important. Rheinmetall wants to correspond to the massively increasing demand for the naval forces and the rising budgets for procurement with efficient system solutions that have a state -of -the -art digital infrastructure and cover the complete spectrum – from the platform to electronics to the sensors and effectors.

The NVL is a privately guided shipyard group with four shipyards in northern Germany (Peene-Werft/ Wolgast, Blohm+Voss and Norderwerft/ Hamburg, new Jadewerft/ Wilhelmshaven) and international locations. It employs a good 2,100 employees worldwide, generated sales of around 1 mrdeur in the 2024 financial year and is considered a pioneer in research and development of autonomous maritime over water systems. Since the beginning of around 150 years ago, NVL has built around 1,000 ships on its shipyards and delivered it to over fifty different marine and coastal guards, it is an established actor in both military shipbuilding and in ship maintenance and repair. Previously known as Lürssen Defense, NVL was separated from the yacht division in 2021 and continued as an independent company within the family -run group of Lürssen. NVL looks after fleets across its entire life cycle and thus helps to keep the German Marine and Navies ready for use worldwide.

A crucial success factor for Rheinmetall is that today the group has excellent market access as a provider in the global naval business, has presence in the international markets and enjoys the corresponding trust of customers.

Another advantage for Rheinmetall results from the expansion of the manufacturing capacities and the expansion of the group’s industrial basis in northern Germany. In particular with the vehicle production of the Vehicle Systems Rheinmetalls division- which operates locations in Kiel and Flensburg, synergy effects are expected on the basis of common material and technology competencies.

NVL’s shipyards offer the possibility to use the existing difficult infrastructure, the specialist knowledge of the employees and the equipment in order to strengthen the production of the vehicles and create capacity reserves for the future in the vehicle area. As a result, Rheinmetall succeeds in avoiding excessive infrastructure investments or extensive conversions of other manufacturing systems.
