Willem II has seen all corners of the field in Rotterdam. Sparta Rotterdam won on Sunday in a relegation match at the castle 4-0. The Tilburgers were hopeless and can prepare for an exciting fight for body preservation.
Willem II insisted at the start of the game, but soon looked at a backlog when Sparta keeper Nick Olij was at the basis of the 1-0 in the 20th minute. With a long staircase he reached the Norwegian striker Tobias Lauritsen, who checked the ball, two men was too smart and then finished with a nice shot.
All hands on deck
Peter Maes’ team managed to bring out relatively little. Willem II was no longer involved in the second half. In the 63rd minute, the Mitchell van Bergen, rented from FC Twente, made Bergen 2-0. The born Ossenaar scored a goal in the Eredivisie for the first time since April 2021.
Club top scorer Lauritsen made his second goal of the afternoon five minutes later. The Icelander Kristian Hlynsson – rented from Ajax – added a little extra in the injury time: with a dry shot he made the 4-0.
Due to the win of Sparta, it is still in 16th place in the Eredivisie, but the distance is only one point until Willem II is in 15th place. For Willem II, it means all hands on deck in the coming weeks to get out of the relegation sheets. This weekend FC Utrecht will visit and a week later Willem II has to go to Go Ahaed Eagles. In Eindhoven they know too well that the team from Deventer is a difficult team: it lost twice in a week.
