Englishwoman Mead becomes EM top scorer ahead of Popp

DFB captain Alexandra Popp had to leave the title of top scorer at the European Championship to her English rival Beth Mead.

The 27-year-old from Arsenal WFC, like the VfL Wolfsburg striker, has scored six goals at the tournament in England. However, with five, Mead had more assists than Popp (0), who was only able to watch the final due to muscular problems. Mead was also named the tournament’s best player.

According to UEFA regulations, assists are used as the next criterion in the event of a tie. Popp had scored at least one goal in all five games before Sunday’s final. Before the 31-year-old, no player had managed to do this at a European Championship. In the 2-1 semi-final against France, the 2016 Olympic champion secured her entry into the final with her two goals.

Third place in the top scorer list is England’s Alessia Russo with four goals. So far, the last German top scorer at a European Championship was Inka Grings from Duisburg in 2009 (6 goals) and 2005 (4).

The 20-year-old Lena Oberdorf was honored as the best young player.
