Harry Maguire was convicted six years ago after an incident on holiday. After years of litigation, he now has to admit defeat.
England international Harry Maguire appears to have suffered a defeat in court. As the British “Sun” reports, Maguire defended himself against allegations that he allegedly hit police officers in an incident while on holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos in 2020. The trial dragged on for years, but now the defense attorney has suffered defeat in a Greek court. An appeal is not possible, but his lawyers have the opportunity to discuss legal issues before a higher court.
According to the report, Maguire was said to have been out with his wife, sister, brother and five other people in the evening when the incident occurred. As the group waited for a taxi home, two men are said to have approached Maguire’s sister. According to the report, Maguire claimed that his sister suddenly lost consciousness and that he then yelled at the men, but there was no struggle.
According to the Sun, three men approached the group as they were about to drive away in a taxi. The men were probably undercover police officers. They surrounded the taxi and forced the group to get out. According to the Sun, Maguire said he did not know they were police officers. He feared that he and the group would be kidnapped. According to him, they were beaten and handcuffed.
According to Maguire, one of the men kicked Maguire in the legs and shouted: “No more football – you will never play again.” Then he thought that they couldn’t possibly be police officers and tried to run away. He had one hand in a handcuff. The charges of resisting arrest and assault arose from this situation. He didn’t hit anyone, according to Maguire’s version of the story.
According to the Sun, the footballer was held in a cell for two days after the incident and then taken to court. His defense attorneys probably only had two hours to prepare for the trial. The footballer was sentenced to a 21-month suspended prison sentence. Maguire filed an appeal, which was successful in that the verdict was initially overturned and a new trial was set. Maguire then returned to England and tried for years to restore his reputation. But now he has failed in court. According to the Sun, his sentence was reduced to 15 months and 20 days in prison on probation and a fine of 1,500 euros.
According to the report, the verdict could still be a problem for Maguire: he would have to declare the conviction if he wanted to receive a visa for the USA and Mexico, two of the host countries for the World Cup in the summer. His chances of taking part in the tournament are therefore in danger.
