On his first official business trip as future England coach, Thomas Tuchel was full of energy. “I feel good, I feel full of energy,” said the 51-year-old after the draw for European qualification for the 2026 World Cup. He “can’t wait to be back on the pitch” and get a feeling for the players again to get the cabin.
Tuchel will officially take up his duties as head coach of the Three Lions on January 1, 2025. From then on he will also regularly attend Premier League games and speak to the players. “I just want them to know: Okay, the boss will be there from January,” said Tuchel with a smile. In the past few weeks he has watched many games on TV and prepared and initiated internal association processes.
In the World Cup qualification, Tuchel and European runner-up England will face Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra in Group K. “A difficult group, that’s my first impression,” said the former Bayern coach. From March onwards you have to approach all games in a focused and serious manner.
Goalscorer Kane remains England captain – for now
Tuchel will probably play his first international match with England with Bayern Munich’s star striker Harry Kane as captain. At the moment there is no reason to think about a change in this much-discussed hierarchy question, he emphasized: “Harry has always been a top captain for England – so why even think about it at the moment?”
The German is aware that his appointment as successor to interim coach Lee Carsley, who took over the job from long-time national coach Gareth Southgate last summer, was not well received by all English people. He now wants to prove to those people “who may be a little worried” “that it is my dream job and that I will give it my all and that I am the man for the job.”
