England coach about Bayern star Jamal Musiala: “It’s a shame”

Jamal Musiala from FC Bayern was one of the better German internationals in the sometimes wild 3-3 draw in England. The performance of the 19-year-old caused great disappointment for England coach Gareth Southgate.

Against Hungary (0: 1), national coach Hansi Flick had waived Jamal Musiala’s starting XI, but then publicly regretted it afterwards. Against England, where the FC Bayern Munich attacking player trained for many years, he was allowed to start for the German national team for the sixth time.

Jamal Musiala pushed his teammate Thomas Müller onto the bench and impressed until he was substituted in the 79th minute. He was surprisingly robust against the ball, and he also managed technical tricks again and again.

With his dribbling in the penalty area, he won the penalty (51st), which ultimately led to the 1-0 lead. The Munich player received a grade of 2.0 from sport.de – no other German international did better.

Bayern star Musiala “an exciting player”

His opponents from England, more precisely national coach Gareth Southgate, took bitter note of his performance. Because: Born in Stuttgart, he lived in London as a child, played for Chelsea FC for eight years and was trained in the English U16 national team, among other things.

Southgate said at the press conference after the game: “Musiala is an exceptional player. We had him play with us with Jude (BVB professional Bellingham, ed. Red) in our U16s. He knows how much we liked him and he knows how hard we tried to keep him.”

Ultimately, however, the DFB won the tug of war for the exceptional talent, with the players of FC Bayern Munich probably also having their share after he switched to the Bundesliga in summer 2019.

“But he trained at Bayern with eight German internationals who had the opportunity to influence him,” Southgate said. “It’s a shame. He’s a very special talent.”

After the direct duel, the 52-year-old finally had to admit that Musiala’s performance at Wembley Stadium was “excellent”: “He’s an exciting player.”
