Energy prices peak today and the ECB decides on interest rate increases

Good morning everyone and welcome to one
new economics blog! It promises to be a numbers day. The ECB makes an interest rate decision (expected to be a small increase) and energy prices peak, more about that later today. This morning we also noticed:

  • According to sources of the Financial Times the ‘NATO standard’ for defense expenditure will probably go from 2 to 3 percent of the GDP of each member state.
  • Statistics Netherlands reports a number of bankruptcies that already exceed the total for 2023.
  • Police union ACP joins the CNV, thus leaving the much smaller Trade Union Confederation for Professionals (VCP). reports The Telegraph.
  • I also found it interesting that Meta, parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, donated a million dollars to Donald Trump’s inauguration fund. That reports The Wall Street Journal. Meta would like to quickly get rid of his ‘woke’ image.
