Energetic new building subsidies exhausted shortly after the start of the application

BERLIN (Dow Jones) – According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, the new construction subsidies for efficient buildings (EH 40/EG40), which started again in the morning, led to a high number of applications. The available budget of 1 billion euros for the “Efficiency House / Efficiency Building 40” (EH/EG40) program with modified funding conditions was already exhausted in the course of the morning. “This means that stage 1 of the realigned new construction funding had to be ended today,” the ministry said. From Thursday, stage 2 of the revised new construction subsidy will start at the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW).

Stage 1, capped at 1 billion euros, includes offers for new construction subsidies for residential and non-residential buildings. The budget for this is limited to 1 billion and this cap was announced in advance, the ministry emphasized. In stage 2, the new building subsidy in the “EH 40 Sustainability” (EH/EG 40 NH) program will continue seamlessly, but with more demanding conditions. The program only allows new construction funding in combination with the Sustainable Building Quality Seal (QNG). This sends a clear signal for the reorientation towards sustainable building. According to the ministry, stage 2 of the new construction subsidy will run until December 31, 2022.

As the third and final step in the realignment of new construction subsidies, a new comprehensive program entitled “Climate-friendly construction” is planned from January 2023. This program will focus even more on greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle of buildings. The exact adjustment of the program is currently being worked out in the federal government. In addition to new building subsidies, renovation measures are also being subsidized by the federal government. Since February 22nd, the application for the redevelopment subsidy has been in progress and will be continued.

Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) put the approval of applications for energy-related new building subsidies at the end of January with a temporary program stop because there was no longer sufficient funding for the approval of further open applications for more than 7 billion euros. The short-term step was met with horror in the industry. The plans for future funding were also criticized as a result.
