After nine years, an era at Liverpool FC will come to an end in the summer. As the Reds and the 33-year-old announced, Mohamed Salah is leaving the 20-time English champion despite a contract until 2027. Both parties have agreed on this. Salah can therefore move on a free transfer.
Salah has played 435 games for the English team since 2017, in which he recorded 255 goals and 122 assists. The Egyptian is just outside the top 20 in the LFC’s record player ranking, but only two other professionals beat the 33-year-old when it comes to the most hits. In Premiere League history, he is fourth in the rankings with 191 goals, behind Wayne Rooney (208), Harry Kane (213) and Alan Shearer (260).
Signed by AS Roma in the summer of 2017 for 42 million euros, Salah has had a significant impact on the club in recent years. With the attacker, Liverpool won, among other things, the Champions League, the English championship twice, the cup once and the Club World Cup. Salah was top scorer four times, most recently last season with 29 goals. He also reached his highest career market value at Liverpool at €150 million.
“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell,” said Salah in a video message on his social media channels: “I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.” Salah, who signed a new two-year contract in April 2025, also emphasized that his time at Anfield had shaped his life. “I could never have imagined how much this club, this city and these people would become a part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It is a passion. It is history. I cannot explain it in words to anyone who is not part of this club. We celebrated victories. We won the most important trophies and we got through the hardest time of our lives together.”
Salah also praised the support he has received from fans who have “accompanied me through the best period of my career” and “stood by me even in the most difficult times”. “I will never forget that and will always carry it in my heart. You gave me the best time of my life, I will always be one of you. The club will always remain my home for me and my family. Thank you for everything.”
His farewell was already in the air in December last year after he publicly criticized coach Arne Slot for not having enough playing time (to the news). “I had a good relationship with the coach. All of a sudden we no longer have a relationship and I don’t know why. Apparently someone doesn’t want me at the club anymore,” he said at the time. Afterwards he spoke to the coach and gained a bit of distance through his trip to the Africa Cup of Nations. Afterwards he was back on the pitch regularly for Liverpool. Overall, he has 19 goal involvements in 34 games this season. Its market value fell to 30 million euros. It is not yet known where he will go next.
