The DHB women just missed the second German title at the European Hockey Championship in Mönchengladbach. In the final they lost to the Netherlands.
After the men’s final victory on Saturday evening, the Danas were unable to trace on Sunday and had to give up the Netherlands just 1: 2 (0: 2). “It was a big struggle for us from the start to finish. I am infinitely proud of this young team. The narrow result is super bitter,” said Selin Oruz, who will end her career in the national team, in magenta.
Both teams had already met in the preliminary round when the Dutch clearly won 5: 1. Pien Dickness (5th) and Luna Fokke (18th) put Oranje in the lead, Lisa Nolte (35th) managed the connection goal for Germany, which had to be outnumbered for a total of 15 minutes. It is already the fifth EM triumph in a row for the Dutch. All big titles have been going to the Netherlands since 2017.
“When we’re so close, it hurts,” said national coach Janneke Schopman, who looked directly into the future: “Today we are a bit sad, but that’s just the beginning. We know what we can do.”
Weak first half of the Danas
In a hectic initial phase with bad passes on both sides, the Dutch took the lead. Pien thickness scored out of the bustle to 1-0 for Oranje (5th). As a result, the Dutch women gained the game against strongly unsettled Danas. It was only in the final seconds of the first quarter that the Germans first really came to the opposing goal, where Sara Strauss narrowly missed the equalizer (15th).
The second phase of the game also started with an early goal for the German team. Luna Fokke was shot freely in front of the goal by Xan de Waard and steered the ball 2-0 in the network by tip-in (18th). The Danas continued to strive, but simply did not come dangerously in front of the Dutch goal and did too many bad passes. At the back, Lisa Nolte saved the highest need against Freeke Moes (27th).
Noltes Connecting goal too little
At the beginning of the second half, the DHB team acted much more offensive and came to the goal with the first penalty corner of the game. A shot from Nolte was deflected by a Dutchman (35th). The new hope followed a setback when Strauss slipped into her opponent in a duel and saw the yellow card (35th). So for ten minutes the Danas had to act less with one player, but continued to hold out in the outnumber. There were no scoring chances on both sides in this phase.
Shortly after the beginning of the final area, the Dutchmen also had to outnumber five minutes because Yibbi Jansen saw the yellow card (46.). There was a good chance of the equalizer for the Danas: Strauss failed with an Argentine backhand on the Dutch goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal (47th).
A good seven minutes before the end, the German team also had to outnumber oruz after a controversial yellow card (53.). The following penalty corner remained without consequences. The German team no longer succeeded in a real rearing in the final phase.
