Emmy award winners warmly welcomed: “It’s like winning it again, unbelievable”

The makers of the Dutch children’s series Kabam are back in the Netherlands. They went to New York with only hand luggage, today they returned with an International Emmy award in their pocket. Now that things have calmed down a bit, Elisabeth and Lilian can proudly look back on the ceremony: “I wish it on everyone, but if you win it yourself, it’s really great.”

After a long flight, creators Lilian Sijbesma, Elisabeth Hesemans and Susan Radder still arrive at Schiphol full of joy and with enthusiastic screams. “It looks like we’re winning this thing again, so unbelievable!” says Elisabeth enthusiastically. She hugs family and friends, and tears come to the director for the first time.

Under water, dogs or the elevator

In the series, which is also used in an education program, we follow a group 3 class. In ten episodes, a different child with a different fear is central; from having to swim underwater through a hole to taking the elevator in your own apartment building.

“Fears are allowed, and you will eventually get over them”

“We told each other all the time that we weren’t nervous at all,” says screenwriter Lilian. “But when you enter that large, elegantly decorated room, you suddenly think: okay, this is real.” The director gave the speech on stage: “My heel even broke off!”

Their three opponents in the ‘Kids: Live Action’ category were Mexico, Singapore and Australia: “All the other makers also had really great work, we were especially afraid of Mexico,” says the screenwriter. “I think our theme is ultimately just a bit more universal. Because it’s about fears, it’s an important topic for children. But it also touches something with adults.” The director adds: “It’s also just shot really well, we had a good cameraman.”

With this award in their pocket, the two, who have mentioned several times to have made this with a whole team, including Susan and Floor who were with them to New York, hope to be asked for more productions. “And maybe there will be a second season,” says Lilian.

“But the most important thing is that this topic has received and continues to receive attention,” the two say. Lilian sees fears as something pure: “Fears are allowed, and you will eventually get over them.”
