Lindsey Vonn secured victory in the downhill on Friday and wanted to repeat the coup on Saturday. But a DSV talent was faster.
When Emma Aicher reached the finish in St. Moritz after an impressive descent and the scoreboard showed first place (1:30.50), the German ski talent cheered and beamed into the camera. No wonder: The 22-year-old DSV ace beat the American Lindsey Vonn, who sensationally secured the World Cup victory on Friday at the age of 41 and now landed in second place (+0.24). Aicher was able to celebrate her third World Cup victory.
The Italian Sofia Goggia came third on Saturday (+0.29). During the course of the downhill race, Aicher repeatedly beamed into the camera and waved to the spectators. Her teammate Kira Weidle-Winkelmann said of Aicher’s performance on ARD: “She implemented it perfectly, from top to bottom. Really cool ride from her. I’m very happy for her.”
ARD expert Felix Neureuther also attested to Aicher that she had learned from Friday to Saturday. A day earlier, Aicher took fifth place. Neureuther also said: “Emma today, hats off. She drove so brilliantly.” He also paid her respects for the fact that she competes in all disciplines and can therefore hardly train because she takes part in many races. Then he added: “Emma can frame the podium today and hang it up.”
Aicher said of her race on ARD in her usual down-to-earth manner: “I’m very satisfied. I tried to let it go.” She emphasized that she enjoyed skiing and that it was cool that it was working. Your work over the last few years would now pay off. Would she celebrate? She just said, “No time to celebrate.”
