The recent July Patch Tuesday update caused crashes, overheating, and battery drain on certain Dell computers. Now, an emergency fix is available to address these serious issues. Users without affected devices do not need this update.
Emergency Update for Dell PCs
The latest Patch Tuesday update, KB5101650 for Windows 11, released in mid-July, introduced not only security enhancements but also several bugs. While this package included over 570 security fixes intended to shield systems from mounting attacks, it inadvertently led to significant problems for some Dell users. Affected users reported unexpected crashes, startup failures, black screens, severe overheating, and rapidly draining batteries.
In response, Microsoft has rolled out an emergency update, KB5121767, as an out-of-band fix for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. This brings the operating system to build versions 26200.8894 and 26100.8894 respectively.
According to Microsoft’s official support document, this patch is specifically designed for systems experiencing these issues. Users with functioning systems can safely ignore this update.
Affected Systems
The problems primarily affect Dell computers. The company has halted the distribution of the faulty July update for impacted hardware configurations. The following models have confirmed issues, although more PCs may be affected:
- Dell Pro Max 14 Premium MA14250
- Dell Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250
- Dell Pro Precision 7 14 PW714260
- Dell Pro Precision 7 16 PW716260
- Precision 5470 / 5480 / 5490 / 5770
- XPS 17 9720 and XPS 17 9730
The source of these failures lies in an incompatibility between a new USB-C interface introduced with Windows 11 and a specific Intel driver known as the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant. This driver plays a critical role in managing thermal operations and regulating fan speeds while using sensors to detect presence near the screen to wake the device. The prior update disrupted this interplay, impairing the devices’ ability to manage energy correctly.
Caution with Update Options
Although the emergency update targets a small user base, it may accidentally install on unrelated systems under certain conditions. If the system settings are configured to automatically download the latest updates upon availability, Windows will automatically download package KB5121767. Users wishing to avoid unnecessary installations should disable this setting. However, installing the emergency update itself should not pose any problems.
In addition to downloading through Windows Update, users can manually retrieve the package via the Microsoft Update Catalog. The files are available for both x64 and ARM systems.
