EM in England | Watzke is hoping for a signal effect for the women’s Bundesliga

After the highly acclaimed performance of the women’s national soccer team at the European Championships in England, Hans-Joachim Watzke is hoping for a signal effect for the Bundesliga.

“Our national team has done an outstanding job. We now have to wait and see whether we can go beyond eventing in the medium term,” said the DFL supervisory board chairman to the “kicker” with reference to the hitherto rather modest number of visitors in everyday league life.

“The decisive step would be taken for me as soon as the Bundesliga participates in terms of spectator popularity. Tournaments are nice and important, but ideally they should have an impact on everyday sporting life. I would really like that because I notice the immense commitment with which the Women’s football is practiced. But in the end it’s the same as always: you vote with your feet,” commented Watzke.

In the debate about equal pay, equal pay in football for men and women, Watzke referred to lower income in women’s football: “It’s absolutely clear that equal pay is the goal. But with equal revenues, i.e. the same revenues. ”

On the fringes of the European Championship, national player Lina Magull had pleaded for a minimum wage for all players in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. “We footballers should earn so well from the 2nd league that nobody has to work part-time anymore. We’re talking about a minimum salary of 2,000 or 3,000 euros a month. That way you can promote development in women’s football in the long term,” said the offensive player from FC Bayern Munich the “image”.
