EM in England | Shoulder injury: Out for Oranje keeper van Veenendaal

Defending champions Netherlands have to accept the next personnel setback at the women’s European Football Championship. Goalkeeper and captain Sari van Veenendaal is out for the rest of the title fights with a shoulder injury.

The 32-year-old was injured in the 1-1 draw against Sweden on Saturday. Van Veenendaal (PSV Eindhoven) will return to the Netherlands and will be replaced by Feyenoord goalkeeper Jacintha Weimar, the Dutch Football Association announced on Monday. Midfielder Jackie Groenen had to be isolated on Sunday after a positive corona test.

“It’s terrible news. Firstly for Sari, of course, but also for our whole team,” said Netherlands coach Mark Parsons. “Sari is much more than just a player in our team. She is our captain and an important leader. We will miss her very much.”
