The 21-year-old French Amandine Mengin ensured the next big surprise in her young career in the Sprint race of the European Biathlon Championship in Martell and secured the silver medal. She cheered a finish that could not have been more dramatic.
The new sprint European champion was not able to get past Amandine Mengin on Friday at the biathlon European Championship. The Swede Anna-Karin Heijdenberg finished a whopping 49.3 seconds ahead as the dominant winner. Behind it, a little drama took place around the 21-year-old French woman.
Mengin had promoted himself out of the top ranks early with a mistake in the first shooting, but from the second round of the run blew to a catch-up hunting. The French woman caught up for a second and saved her last grains until the final round. That should pay off fully.
With a total time of 22: 32.4 minutes, she secured the silver medal. Your lead over the bronze: 0.1 seconds.
Biathlon overflower “Was on the maximum”
“I knew I had reserves in the last round,” said the overjoyed Vice European champion after the race at the “L’équipe” microphone. “I gave everything and was at the maximum,” said Mengin about her silver coup, which was not at all a few weeks ago.
Mengin had only made her debut on the international biathlon stage in January. At that time she was allowed to start for the French team in the IBU Cup for the first time. In the three races on the Arber, she won two victories and a second place. A week in later two top ten places followed in Brezno.
The 21-year-old was appointed as a reward in the European Championship squad. Here, as a fourth, she just narrowly scraped past the podium. On Friday, the promoted team of the past few weeks crowned her high -altitude flight with the greatest success of her career so far.
