Eline Nagelkerke (16) from Oudenbosch has become the winner of the battle for ‘The Tastiest Brabant Sausage Roll 2023’. The winner was presented with the challenge trophy on Wednesday evening at Summa College in Eindhoven by singer and soap star John de Bever. Eline is the youngest winner among the professionals in the history of the sausage bread competition.
Eline is the successor of Giel Vermeulen of Bakkertje Deeg from Heusden. After several years with prizes in the home bakers category, she started her own webshop.
The competition was held for the 26th time this year for professionals (bakers & butchers), home bakers, VMBO students and MBO students. Keano Heijdenrijk of Markland College won in the category Best Brabant sausage roll for pre-vocational secondary education students. Keano comes from Oud Gastel.
In the MBO student category, Niels van Kleij won from Curio. He comes from Nieuwendijk.
Many home bakers
It turns out that because of the corona years, many people have been baking at home in small and large kitchens, sheds and storage cubicles. Huub Kloks from Sint-Oedenrode received the first prize in this category from Marco van Baalen, director of the Netherlands Immaterial Heritage Knowledge Centre. The 73-year-old Huub participated in the competition for the first time.
Hundreds of sausage rolls
The sausage rolls were judged by twelve jury members, consisting of six professional jury members (bakers, butchers and cooks) and six consumers. After a call on Omroep Brabant, no less than 249 men and women registered as candidates for the so-called consumer jury.

According to jury chairman Hans Elbers, the level of this 26th edition was again high and the finalists were not much different. Also this year sausage rolls were bought by the professional participants in the preliminary phase mystery shopper. In this way, the quality is also checked outside the competition. It is a condition that the sausage rolls on the counter of the shops have the same quality as the rolls submitted for the competition.

- Appearance top
- Appearance underside
- Minced meat stuffing
- Bread
- Consistency / bite
- Overall taste
