The leader of Sumar advances that “starting tomorrow we will govern better” and announces that tomorrow she will open a dialogue with the “progressive and democratic” forces

Yolanda Díaz proclaimed her salvation at the stroke of midnight from this Sunday to Monday. Sumar’s candidate faced her decisive examination this Sunday, an all or nothing between renewing her position in the Government or going to the irrelevance of the opposition and facing an unstructured parliamentary group. The election night results did not leave a clear government majority, but Díaz celebrated her results as a complete victory and took it for granted that the progressive coalition would be reissued. “Starting tomorrow we are going to govern better,” advanced the acting vice president. “We have won rights and we promise to continue to do so.”

Sumar’s candidate gave a speech at the stroke of midnight, her voice breaking at times, in a markedly festive atmosphere and among applause and shouts of “president” from dozens of party militants who gathered at the headquarters. “Hope defeated fear“, proclaimed the candidate after declaring her victory. “Today people will sleep more peacefully. Democracy today has won and comes out stronger. We have won!”, cried out. She did so surrounded by a multitude of candidates and leaders of the coalition parties such as Iñigo Errejón, Monica Garcia, Alberto Garzon either Ione Belarrawho accompanied the intervention of the Galician with a serious gesture.

At different times in his speech, Díaz promised to continue the work of the coalition Executive, assuming that he would continue to lead the country, and advanced that this Monday he would open talks to reach the necessary agreements for this. “You know that I make dialogue out of politics,” he began, “and starting tomorrow I will start a dialogue with all the progressive and democratic formations of our country to guarantee the Government in Spain”

The results of the election night do not leave a clear scenario, but in Sumar they were celebrated as a success, seeing that they had options to revalidate the coalition and become decisive, all at the expense of Junts per Catalunya. Sumar’s candidate confirmed the path that will be opened in the coming days, in an attempt to reissue the coalition.

changing scenario

In Sumar the mood changed throughout the night. Before the ballot began, despondency gripped the ranks of the coalition in view of the latest polls published before the count began and which predicted the fall below thirty seats and its passing into irrelevance. But the polls failed again, and as soon as the scrutiny began, the mood changed rapidly. First towards a contained emotion, when the PSOE surprised with its resistance, to later return to caution, when the PP took the lead, to finally lead to an unmitigated celebration, under a compelling argument: if there can be a progressive government, all the options go through Sumar.

Yolanda Díaz’s candidacy achieved its objective of becoming the decisive votes to reissue an Executive of Pedro Sánchez, where Yolanda Díaz would again occupy the Vice Presidency and shield herself as leader of Sumar against a coalition born for the electoral appointment and where Podemos threatened a civil war if it did not meet its objectives.

But the objectives have been met only in part. The scenario of blockade leaves the outcome in the hands of Carles Puigdemont’s party, a formation that they consider right-wing; And because they have not seen their second set goal fulfilled either: surpass Vox to occupy third place. That milestone became an obsession during the electoral campaign, but it was not finally fulfilled. Those of Santiago Abascal were left with 33 seats, losing 19, and closely followed by Yolanda Díaz, who achieved 31 compared to 35 in 2019. This did not prevent the celebrations in Sumar, whose role will now depend on the negotiations that are opened to form a government.
