SAN SALVADOR – With 62 murders, Saturday marked the most violent revival of criminal gangs in El Salvador since President Nayib Bukele took office in June 2019. The last time so many people died in 24 hours was on August 15, 2015, with 57 fatalities. The parliament, the Asamblea Legislativa, has declared a state of emergency for thirty days. A number of civil rights, such as the freedom of assembly, have been temporarily suspended. Salvadorans can be jailed for two weeks without going through a judge.
