The Eisbären Berlin end the year 2022 with a defeat. On Friday evening, the German champions in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) lost to the Straubing Tigers 3:4 (2:1, 1:1, 0:1, 0:0, 0:1) after a penalty shoot-out.

The goals for the Berliners were scored by Yannick Veilleux, Marcel Noebels and Kevin Clark.

In front of 4485 spectators in the Eisstadion am Pulverturm, both teams started cautiously. As the season progressed, however, the Berliners repeatedly created good chances from their convincing forechecking.

In the 14th minute, thanks to Veilleux, they made it 1-0. Just 34 seconds later, however, Straubing’s Travis Turnbull equalized before another 32 seconds later Noebels put the polar bears back in the lead.

In the middle section, the pace remained high, the physicality also increased. Despite some clear chances, the next goal didn’t come until the 38th minute when Clark increased to 3:1. Straubing’s Jason Akeson shortened again in return.

In the 46th minute, Joshua Samanski scored to make it 3:3 and gave the Tigers an additional boost in the final third. The decision came after the goalless overtime in the shoot-out.
