It is no longer a surprise, but it is still a bitter blow for Eintracht Frankfurt in terms of sport: striker Omar Marmoush is moving on to Manchester City, and there is plenty of compensation for the Hessians.
What has been hinted at for days and now almost weeks is now official: Omar Marmoush is leaving Eintracht Frankfurt after a year and a half and moving to Manchester City in the Premier League. Eintracht announced this on Thursday. “Omar approached us about wanting to move and emphasized that it might be a unique opportunity for him to play for an absolute top club in the Premier League,” said sports director Markus Krösche.
Marmoush is difficult to replace
Marmoush, who was involved in 57 goals in 67 games for the Hessians, leaves a big gap in the Frankfurt attack. At least the account is getting fuller: According to reports, City is paying a transfer fee of 75 million euros for the 25-year-old Egyptian, and including bonuses, this could even amount to a good 80 million euros. Eintracht brought Marmoush from Wolfsburg on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. The Egyptian signed a contract in Manchester until 2029.
After the game against Borussia Dortmund, in which Marmoush no longer took part, the attacker had already said an emotional farewell to the Eintracht audience. “He will always be warmly welcomed in Frankfurt,” said sports director Krösche as he said goodbye.
It is not yet clear who will replace Marmoush in attack and who will score the goals alongside Hugo Ekitiké in the future. Elye Wahi from Olympique Marseille is currently considered the hottest candidate Arnaud Kalimuendo from Stade Rennes or the Dane Mathias Kvistgaarden is still in the race.
City in crisis
For Manchester, the strong dribbling Egyptian will be a face of rehabilitation alongside superstar Erling Haaland in the second half of the season. For months, the Citizens were in a crisis of results and had to bury their title ambitions in the Premier League for the time being. The fourth-placed team must try to catch up and limit the damage and first secure qualification for the Champions League.
