Kevin Trapp returns to Frankfurt for a special moment. What happens on the pitch then exceeds all expectations of the 58,700 spectators.

Accompanied by speech choirs and thunderous applause, Eintracht Frankfurt ceremoniously passed his long-time captain Kevin Trapp-and then celebrated the return to the Champions League with a spectacular 5-1 win against Galatasaray Istanbul.

30 minutes before the kick-off of the royal class game, the ex-national goalkeeper, which was switched to FC Paris in summer, received the lifelong club membership as a farewell gift. “I am very, very grateful for everything I was able to experience here. Being able to say goodbye in this context is something very special,” said the visibly moved trapp at the streaming service DAZN.

“You have not only become a role model, you also won titles. You are a legend in this club for all times,” said Frankfurt spokesman Axel Hellmann the 35-year-old. Trapp thanked the fans primarily: “To be able to experience everything together with you was the greatest in my career. I will never be completely gone.”

After the emotional ceremony, the Bundesliga club demonstrated its international maturity in front of 58,700 spectators. Although Yunus Akgün brought the Turkish champion in the lead in the 8th minute, Frankfurt turned the game before half -time. An own goal of Davinson Sanchez (37th) and hit by Can Uzun (45.+2) and Jonathan Burkardt (45.+4) provided the turn.

“It was a nervous start. But how we increased after 0-1 deficit and then to win with the backdrop, that was insane. Perfect just tonight,” said double scorer Burkardt, who was honored as the player of the game. After the change, Burkardt (66th) and Ansgar Knauff (75th) increased to 5: 1.

Trapp had wished his ex-colleague all the best before the kick-off for the Champions League: “This level is about details. This is a brutal league. But everything is still possible.” The long-time Eintracht captain should be right-after 940 days of abstinence, Frankfurt returned to the premier class with a dream start.

Trapp played a total of 383 competitive games for the Hesse, his greatest success was the triumph in the Europa League 2022.
