The final dream has shattered: the Eintracht Frankfurt footballers missed the longed-for European Cup final.
The team led by captain Laura Freigang won 1-0 (1-0) against BK Häcken in Gothenburg on Thursday evening – but the burden from the semi-final first leg (0-3) against the Swedish champions weighed too heavily.
Nicole Anyomi (31st) temporarily revived Frankfurt’s hopes of progressing, but in the end the Hessians were unable to catch up. Instead, Häcken moved into the first final (April 25th/26th and May 2nd/3rd) of the newly created, second highest European competition.
Even before kick-off, coach Niko Arnautis emphasized that his team needed “a perfect day”. The Frankfurt team at least showed the will to make the supposedly impossible possible and put pressure on them from the start. However, there was a lack of the necessary efficiency and precision in front of the goal until Anyomi finally rewarded the offensive efforts.
Häcken rarely had dangerous opportunities, but Eintracht keeper Lina Altenburg had to intervene decisively a few times. Frankfurt also had more of the game in the second half, but Häcken initially defended aggressively.
