Eintracht Frankfurt: Makoto Hasebe extends contract – age record beckons

368 Bundesliga games

Makoto Hasebe has again postponed the end of his career by a year and will also be on the pitch for Eintracht Frankfurt in the coming season. Early on Tuesday morning, the Bundesliga club announced that the Japanese had signed a new contract until June 30, 2024 – and now has the age record in sight.

Hasebe celebrated his 39th birthday in January and, having played against VfB Stuttgart (1-1) the weekend before last, is the third-oldest player in SBU history to play a competitive game for Eintracht. Only Rudi Bommer (39 years, 7 months, 17 days) and Ulrich Stein (39 years, 5 months, 17 days) are ahead of the defensive player, who could move up to first place in September this year. Hasebe is 18th in the Bundesliga as a whole, only five outfield players were older when they last played.

Oldest Players: Eintracht Frankfurt / Bundesliga history

“Makoto is the only professional who can decide for himself whether to renew his contract. We’re glad he made that decision and that we’re staying with us for another year as a player. With his attitude, his discipline and his footballing quality, he is not only an absolute role model in our team, but also an enrichment for our game. At almost 40 years of age, he is a Bundesliga great and is also an ambassador for Eintracht Frankfurt and German football beyond national borders,” said Frankfurt’s sporting director Markus Krösche.

Hasebe joined Eintracht from 1. FC Nürnberg in 2014, having previously worn the jersey for VfL Wolfsburg between 2008 and 2013, with which he won the German championship in 2009. In total, the right-footed player has played 368 Bundesliga games, only four foreigners have played more often in the German upper house (to the statistics).

Hasebe himself said of the signature: “I am very happy that I can and am allowed to play football at the highest level with Eintracht for another year. It’s special to be part of the team at such a big and successful club at the age of 40. I will continue to take responsibility, want to be a role model for our young players and lead the way. Frankfurt has become my home, Eintracht is my club. That’s why I’m already looking forward to being part of this club after my career.”
