Eintracht Frankfurt: Keeper Trapp claims a DFB goal

Three-way battle with Ter Stegen and Neuer

National keeper Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt has not yet given up the fight for number one in the German goal. “I always have the highest goals in my career. What kind of work ethic would I have if I was satisfied with less from the start?” said the 32-year-old in an interview with “picture on sunday“. Trapp explained that he always wanted the maximum, but you had to work for it and earn it.

National coach Hansi Flick recently indicated that Trapp rival Marc-André ter Stegen (30) from FC Barcelona would be number one in the national team during the injury to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (36). The Barça keeper previously announced that he wanted to be the number one guard of the German goal at EURO 2024 and was “ready for the next step. Of course I aspire to be number one: at Barça, but also in the national team.”

Flick said: “We have the fewest problems in Germany in this position. We have three, four, five goalkeepers who are among the best in the world. That’s why I have no worries at all.” Neuer, who was still the clear number one at the World Cup in November, will be out for an indefinite period with a broken leg. It remains to be seen whether the Bayern keeper will be fit again at the home European Championship.

“I’m someone who can appreciate the performance of others, and Marc-André ter Stegen is also having a very good season. The national coach has said that this year he wants to give both him and me the chance to show ourselves. So I’m assuming I’ll get my chance. And when it’s there, I want to use it,” explained Trapp, who added: “But you don’t get into the goal of the national team by talking, only by performance. So my task is very clear: I want to perform well, recommend myself to Hansi Flick and make the decision as difficult as possible for him.”

Mature keeper Trapp: “My experience gives me security”

Trapp explained that he had matured both on and off the pitch: “The past two years felt like the best and most beautiful of my career. This is also due to the fact that I now have a certain calm and experience, I see some things very differently than a few years ago. If five or six years ago the final training session wasn’t what I had imagined, I would ask the goalkeeping coach to do another exercise so that I could go into the dressing room with a good feeling afterwards. Now I know that one workout makes no difference. I don’t do less now, I’m no less ambitious than I used to be, but I can assess things differently and put them into perspective. My experience gives me security.”

When asked whether the Europa League winner from 2022, who had extended his contract with Eintracht Frankfurt until 2026 at the beginning of February, could imagine continuing his career into old age as a goalkeeper like something like “Gigi” Buffon, Trapp said: ” If I can still get out of bed normally at the age of 45 and then fly into the corners fast enough, why not? I only have one wish: I don’t want to have to retire because of an injury or because my performance is no longer sufficient, I want to do it of my own free will. I want to decide when it’s over at some point.”
