The award-winning Finnish translator died last week.

Finnish writer and poet Einari Aaltonen has died. The publisher Tammi tells about it on Facebook. According to the update, Aaltonen’s death was sudden.

– The Finnish writer and poet Einari Aaltonen passed away suddenly last week. Einari was respected and versatile in his profession, and during his career he had time to translate the works of numerous prominent authors from English, French and Spanish. In Tamme, he is especially remembered as the Finnish translator of the Nobel laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah.

Aaltonen worked as a translator since 1999. He translated many kinds of works from non-fiction to artistic prose into Finnish. Aaltonen’s Finnish translations were often nominated for awards. He won the Maurice de Copper translation award in 2019.
