The rocket attack also reportedly damaged the water supply of the city of Belgorod. That city is located about 80 kilometers north of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, which was hit hard by a Russian attack on Friday morning. At least 18 people are said to have been killed and 111 others injured in the Ukrainian attack on the city of Belgorod. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported this. Two children were also among the dead. Fifteen other children were injured. Cluster bombs are also said to have been used in the attacks. The reports of the high death toll in Russia follow shortly after one of the largest Russian air strikes in Ukraine since the start of the invasion. The figures reported by Russia have not been confirmed by an independent source for the time being.

Images published by authorities showed cars on fire and buildings with broken windows. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been “informed” of the Ukrainian attack on Belgorod, a Kremlin spokesman said. The Russian Defense Ministry, in turn, warned that the attack will not go “unpunished.”

The United Nations Security Council will meet on Saturday evening at 10 p.m. Belgian time to discuss the recent air attacks on the western Russian city of Belgorod. This was reported by the Russian mission to the UN. “The terrorist attack on Belgorod will be dealt with in the UN Security Council,” said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry. Ukraine regularly carries out attacks on Russia’s border regions, although these usually result in fewer casualties. Kiev has not yet responded to the Russian accusations.

Drones shot down

Earlier there were also attacks on the Bryansk border region. There was also a child among the victims. Unmanned Ukrainian aircraft were shot down above the regions of Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol and also above the capital Moscow. As usual, Moscow calls the attacks “terrorist”. Ukraine and Russia regularly attack each other with drones during wars. Nothing has yet been announced about possible damage.

The death toll from last Friday’s Russian attack has risen to 39, President Zelensky announced on social media on Saturday. According to Zelensky, there were a total of 159 victims. The president writes on X that almost 120 cities and towns have been affected by the attacks and that relief operations are continuing. Hundreds of civilian targets are said to have been hit in one of the deadliest attacks since the war began in February 2022.

The president also said he is grateful for the expressions of support the country has received from world leaders and other public figures. He also pleads for help. Zelensky states that “weapons in the hands of Ukrainians are always a means of protecting lives” and that “together” Russian “terror” can be defeated.
