Eight of Diego Maradona’s doctors face indictment for involuntary manslaughter

Among other things, the personal doctor of the football legend is assumed to be inadequately treated. Shortly before his death, Maradona had undergone brain surgery.

Eight medical professionals are to appear in court in connection with the death of Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona. The eight people, including Maradona’s personal physician Leopoldo Luque, are being investigated for manslaughter. The group is accused of having acted “negligently” and thus partly to blame for Maradona’s death. It is not yet clear when the process will begin.

Maradona died in November 2020 at the age of 60, according to official information as a result of a heart attack. Three weeks before his death, Maradona had undergone brain surgery performed by Luque for a blood clot. Just eight days later, Maradona was released from hospital to recover at his home in Tigres. He died there shortly afterwards. According to the indictment, the doctors treating Maradona did not provide sufficient care, but “left him to his fate by omission”.

Prosecutor: Maradona was in “a situation of helplessness”

In addition to Luque, the accused also include psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Diaz and medical coordinator Nancy Forlini. Among the four other people are nurses.

According to prosecutors, the group would have put Maradona in a “situation of helplessness.” It also said the defendants were “protagonists in an unprecedented, utterly flawed and reckless home hospitalization” and allegedly responsible for a “series of improvisations, managerial errors and deficiencies”.

If the accused are found guilty, they face prison terms of between 8 and 25 years.
