Düsseldorf/Cologne (dpa-AfX)-With nationwide work, unions want to paralyze large parts of public life in North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday. In many cities, trams and buses remain in the depots, daycare centers and swimming pools, and trash cans are to be stable on the roadside.

The “nationwide warning strike day” in North Rhine -Westphalia is the highlight of the actions before the third round of collective bargaining in the public service, said the Verdi union.

“The employees in the public service do an indispensable work for our society,” said the deputy Verdi regional district manager NRW, Frank Bethke. With the warning strike throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, one wants to show what doesn’t work without them. Many thousands of employees should come together for rallies in several cities.

Commuters have to improvise

The commuters are particularly affected. Verdi announced that there were to be expected to have extensive failures in public transport in the Ruhr area and in the big cities. There has been no subway in Düsseldorf since Monday and hardly any bus, public transport has been paralyzed in Cologne since Tuesday. The best way to switch to bicycles or on S-Bahn and regional trains should do commuters in Cologne.

Because regional trains and S -Bahn run according to plan – the railway companies are not affected by the tariff dispute.

Kitas remain closed or only offer emergency care

Families also have to reschedule: educators in daycare centers are also called for work. In Düsseldorf, the city announced that at least trying to offer emergency care for children, whose parents are absolutely dependent on it.

In Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, Herne, Bottrop and many other cities, Verdi calls up employees in local government, daycare centers, clinics, savings banks, swimming pools, job centers and employment agencies.

Demand for more money and more free time

In the collective bargaining negotiations for the public service of the federal government and the municipalities, the union calls for eight percent more wages, but at least at least 350 euros more, as well as three additional days off.

“Appreciation begins where people can afford their lives from their work and work under working conditions that do not make you sick. We will fight for this until the end of this tariff round,” said the North Rhine-Westphalian state chairman of the education and science (GEW), Ayla Çelik.

So far, the employers had not submitted a specific offer, but rejected the claims as unavailable. With the warning strikes, the citizens are primarily a shame, they criticized.

The third round of collective bargaining for the public service of the federal government and municipalities begins this Friday (March 14th) in Potsdam and lasts until March 16./Mhe/DP/ZB
