The Edmonton Oilers have brought in reinforcements for their weakened defense before the trade deadline. The Alberta team negotiated a deal for defenseman Connor Murphy with the Chicago Blackhawks.
As both teams announced on Monday, the Blackhawks will receive a second-round pick in the 2028 draft in return. Chicago will also retain half of the $4.4 million cap hit for the 32-year-old, who will become a free agent following this season.
Edmonton has allowed the fifth-most goals in the league and the second-most at five-on-five. Even the hoped-for change in goal has brought little so far. Tristan Jarry, who came via trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins, has a catch rate of .864 after twelve appearances for the Oilers – it would be the weakest of his career.
Murphy has only failed to reach 100 blocks in a season twice in his 12-year NHL career and will also ensure that left-shooter Jake Walman can move back to his usual position on the blue line.
Murphy has less to contribute there. Over 805 NHL games, the American has just 47 goals and 173 points.
Edmonton had already prepared a new signing on Sunday and placed left wing Andrew Mangiapane and defenseman Alec Regula on the waiver list. The two professionals have since been sent to the AHL. Mattias Janmark also ended up on the long-term injured list.
The Oilers (29-24-8), third in the Pacific Division, host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
