Ed Sheeran says he never expected to win an Emmy

He won the award for his track “A Beautiful Game” – an absolute surprise for him.

Singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran was awarded an Emmy on the evening of January 7th. He won in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category for the track “A Beautiful Game,” which he wrote for the “Ted Lasso” series. Due to scheduling constraints, the singer was unable to attend the awards ceremony and only reacted to winning his first-ever Emmy via Instagram. Sheeran took to the social media platform to say he “didn’t expect” to take home the award.

It was first announced in October 2021 that the pop star had been asked to write music for the third season of “Ted Lasso.” He shares the award with co-authors Max Martin and Foy Vance.

“I didn’t expect to win at all”

His Instagram post reads: “We won an Emmy last night. I didn’t expect to win at all and it was a real surprise when I woke up to the news.”

Regarding his absence from the event, he said that he was “just about to start the Asian tour” and was “unfortunately somewhere else”.

The special feature of the song “A Beautiful Game” is that what you can hear in the track was recorded by the audience at one of his stadium shows and “sang the final song” to really create a football atmosphere to match the series create.
