Ed Sheeran could open the European Football Championship on Munich’s Theresienwiese

From June 14th to July 14th, 2024, football games will take place across Germany as part of the 17th European Championship. As a prelude to the sporting competition, festivities with a live program are scheduled to start on the evening of June 12, 2024. It is now assumed that Ed Sheeran will play the opening concert – in Munich on the Theresienwiese. However, neither the artist nor the location has been officially confirmed at the moment.

As the “Süddeutsche” reports, the economic department is said to have presented the Munich city council with a plan to hold the opening show for Euro 2024 on the Theresienwiese. It is billed in the proposal as a “cultural inaugural festival for all fans” with an “international pop music superstar”. If there is no approval for the 42 hectare Münchner Platz, where Oktoberfest is also celebrated, the event should be moved to Berlin.

There would be positive voices from politics about a major musical event during the European Football Championship. SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner told “Süddeutsche”: “In this particular case, we would find a concert in the run-up to the opening game on the Theresienwiese okay. That would be a nice start to the fan festivals in the city.”

It is not yet known when a specific decision will be made, who will play where, when and how much the tickets for the opening event will cost.
