The days of mathematically named Ed Sheeran albums will soon be over. The singer announced on Wednesday (March 01) that the final work in his series will be called SUBTRACT. It is said to be the most personal of his albums to date: Sheeran is ready to open “the trapdoor to his soul” for the listener. The album will be released on May 5, 2023.

Sheeran revealed that he’s been working on the album for “a decade trying to create the perfect acoustic album.” Due to his wife’s cancer and the “sudden” death of his best friend Jamal, the year 2022 was so drastic that it permanently changed his mental health and music vision and inspired the album anew.

The singer is making the illness of a woman public for the first time – the press release for the record also states that Cherry Seaborn was only allowed to have an operation after the birth of their second child.

In a diary entry that has now been published, the singer says: “Music is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. i have the songs [damals] written without knowing what they will be […]. In just over a week, I was able to replace a decade of work with my deepest, darkest thoughts.”

Thus, the album should clearly stand out from his previous records. His new music is much darker and more honest – and no longer created to please others. The singer has already published the tracklist of SUBTRACT:

  • “boat”
  • “Saltwater”
  • “Eyes Closed”
  • “Life Goes On”
  • dusty
  • “End of Youth”
  • color blind
  • curtains
  • “Borderline”
  • “spark”
  • “vegas”
  • “Sycamore”
  • “No Strings”
  • “The Hills of Aberfeldy”

The album is co-written and produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, who was introduced to Ed Sheeran through Taylor Swift. Together, Dessner and Sheeran have produced 30 songs, 14 of which will be available on SUBTRACT.
