Ecuador has expanded the protected natural area around the Galapagos Islands by 60,000 square kilometers. It now connects to the reserve around Costa Rica’s Cocos Island, creating a safe migration route of nearly a thousand kilometers for whales, sharks and sea turtles, among others.
