The complex is only four years old. The manager, Joop Veermam, saw the day before yesterday a shift in the roof covering and immediately rang the bell. He sent an email with a photo to the municipality. “They came to look and came to the conclusion: what can we actually do about this?” Joop says. A day later the whole – rubber mats with planting, steel and bolts – came down.
“Fortunately there was no one at the bicycle racks,” says Veerman. Because part of the roof has been pushed on the racks next to the sports hall. The municipality has since closed the bicycle racks with a ribbon and is investigating ‘how communication went internally with regard to the report’, the spokesperson said.
Construction error or heat?
There is plenty of speculation about the cause of the incident. Joop himself thinks that the roof has been tilted for the (sedum) planting and that it might have gone wrong in combination with the heat.
The municipality stands for a mystery and first wants to have everything examined thoroughly before they say something about it. On the other side of the building you can find the same planting on the sloping roof. This will be inspected as soon as possible, according to the municipality. Until then, the terrace that is located under the roof is closed to the public.
