“So joke, are you there again?”

The now for a year and a half in Spain have not finished anything at the Rotterdam accent of Rachel Hazes. She looks good. A long hippie dress, equipped and hardly any makeup on.

Yes, there we are again. Chef Ilyana and Freddy, the Colombian waiter that we both recognize from the last time and Rachel himself walk towards and from full trays of wine and beer and full plates with food. The portions at Hazes are still good, we see. The terrace is packed with only Dutch people.

La Carihuela

“Yes, things are going very well,” says Rachel when we notice that it is nice and busy. “Ilyana, which table is for these people?” The chef points to a table under the canopy. In the shade, luckily, because it is warm this afternoon in the heart of the Dutch La Carihuela district in Torremolinos.

What is the soup of the day today? Do they also have pumpkin soup?
“No, joke, we don’t have that,” says Rachel who walks by with a stack of empty signs. The hostess himself runs just as fast in the ministry as the staff.

“There is always tomato soup and day soup is often an onion soup. And if we do crazy, sometimes a mushroom soup.” We take a tomato soup, a goat cheese salad and a chicken sate. The dishes on the map still all have the name of the songs of Hazes. Old Dre, as Rachel calls him.

Rotterdam directness

There are some people next to us. Rachel and Ilyana sit against each other three tables. A group of men comes in with suitcases. “We have just landed,” says one of the gentlemen. “We thought: first eat at Hazes!” They have already made the reservation in the Netherlands. Can they also take a picture of her and themselves?
The hostess laughs.

“Of course, sir. You must be able to show at home that you really ate that bad person!” The Rotterdam directness is appreciated, because the entire table laughs. And then takes a picture with Rachel.

In the photo

Other guests also smell their chance.
“Can we also have a photo with you?”
That is allowed. The Casa Hazes boss with everyone who wants to be photographed patiently. Is that the case every day? “Yes, that is how it goes,” agrees Rachel Hazes. “Nowadays I always put on a dress with long sleeves. Of course I am small and people often put an arm around me. But then I always have everyone’s armpit on my shoulder. And here, with these temperatures, everyone naturally sweats a lot.”

The main course arrives and we order another wine and a beer. The goat cheese salad and the chicken satay that we have ordered are nicely made up and taste good. Is there also apple sauce for the fries? “Of course,” says Freddy. “We are Hazes, right?”

Piece of cake

If we have been eaten, we want a piece of cake. “Not a cake today, honey,” Rachel announces. “There is only one cake here and that is an old cake. And that’s me.” But luckily there are strawberries with whipped cream and there is ice. And that too turns out to be large portions.

“Another coffee?” Rachel asks if she removes the empty ice coupes from the table. We want that but there is already a row of people waiting for a table and we are full.

“Better the bill. We are full and you need the table,” we say.

“That’s sweet, honey,” Rachel answer. “Do you know what? Then is the last coffee you had from me. Are you coming again soon?”
