The German Pascal Ackermann was second, the Czech Pavel Bittner was third. Steffen De Schuyteneer was the first Belgian in fourth place, Gerben Thijssen was tenth.
Many West Flemish people were involved in the early flight, including Gianni Marchand, Victor Vercouillie and Warre Vangheluwe. A few more flights were to follow, but shortly before the end the platoon put an end to it. The final was marred by a crash two kilometers from the end.
“It was not an easy day,” says Groenewegen. “But there was a perfect lead-out, I was in the right position. We had to wait for the right moment and we succeeded. It was a good sprint, that length lead was enough.”
Groenewegen takes his second victory this season in Koksijde. He succeeds Edward Theuns.
