Dutch university makes three tons of ‘profit’ on recovered ransom that was paid to hackers

The Dutch police and the Public Prosecution Service have recovered part of the ransom money that Maastricht University paid to criminal hackers in 2019. The crypto coins in question have increased in value thanks to fortunate timing. That is why the university is getting half a million euros back, while at the time it paid almost 200,000 euros in ransom. This is apparent from a reconstruction of the daily newspaper ‘de Volkskrant’.
