According to CBC, a statement from the owner of the ship, Royal Wagenborg in Delfzijl, states that the leak was discovered after daylight on Thursday morning and the incident was immediately reported to authorities in Canada and the Netherlands. No injuries were reported and the leak has since been repaired. Wagenborg says he is fully cooperating with the Canadian authorities and has promised to take measures to limit further environmental damage.

According to the Coast Guard, the ship, which was en route from Baie Comeau in Quebec to Rotterdam, has been ordered to sail to the port of St. John’s. The ship is now moored there, according to data from the Marinetraffic website† “Our environmental protection specialists are monitoring the situation to ensure that the owner is taking appropriate action,” reads the Coast Guard’s Twitter page.

“We will continue to work with the owner to develop an appropriate response plan to ensure an appropriate response to the pollution incident,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
