If you walk through the large room in De Bonte Wever in Assen, you will hear cheers, applause and encouraging cries every once in a while. The entire weekend it is all about the Dutch Open Darts. Thousands of darters are participating in the dart tournament, where amateurs and professionals play against each other.

“The tap opened this morning at 10 a.m., so the atmosphere is good,” says Paul Engelbertink, director of the Dutch Darts Bond.

“It goes well under circumstances,” says a dartster. “I just lost, but well, we can enter the party tent.” Other darters hope to continue playing. “I have a tough draw, a favorite on the board. If I win it, I hope to get far.”

During the tournament, the amateurs can just throw against the professionals. Beau Greaves and Vincent van de Voort, among others, participate. “I would like to throw an arrow against Michael van Gerwen,” says a participant. “He is the best in the Netherlands.” But unfortunately, Van Gerwen is not able to throw arrows this weekend in De Bonte Wever.
